Sand Separator / Grit Removal System
Introduction

The Sand Separator by Purecreek Environmental Services is engineered to reliably remove heavy particles such as sand, grit, and sediment from wastewater. By extracting abrasive material early, the unit protects pumps, tanks, and other downstream treatment equipment. Our solution supports municipal and industrial applications with high performance and low maintenance.
Applications
- Municipal wastewater treatment plants (primary and pretreatment stages)
- Industrial wastewater: food & beverage, mining, pulp & paper, manufacturing plants
- Stormwater runoff and combined sewer systems
- Protection of biological reactors, membrane filtration, and other sensitive downstream systems
How It Works
Wastewater enters the sand separator where flow velocity is controlled to allow heavy particles to settle. Depending on design, grit is captured in a hopper or basin, or conveyed out via screw or other means. Clarified water exits the separator while grit and sand settle out and are removed. Flow design prevents organic material from settling, focusing on heavy, inert particles.
Models & Options
- Separator Types: vortex, gravity, hopper-based, or mechanical removal designs
- Materials: stainless steel AISI 304 / 316, or carbon steel with protective coating
- Customizable size / capacity: designed to handle flows from small plants to large industrial systems
- Optional features: automatic grit wash, dewatering, grit classifier, grit pump for sludge removal

Key Benefits
- Protects downstream equipment (pumps, pipes, membranes) from abrasion
- Reduces maintenance and repair costs due to grit damage
- Improves efficiency and longevity of biological / membrane systems
- Low operational costs and easy maintenance
- Configurable to suit both municipal and industrial wastewater demands
Compliance
Designed in cooperation with SEFT Group, Purecreek’s sand separators are built to meet Canadian standards (CSA, UL, ETL) and engineered for performance and durability in harsh environments.
Case Reference
Installed in a municipal wastewater plant in Saskatchewan, our sand separator reduced pump maintenance by 35%, and significantly lowered wear on downstream sand filters and membranes.
Maintenance & Operation
- Periodic cleaning or flushing of grit basin or hopper
- Inspection and replacement of exposed parts such as scraper blades or grit pumps
- Safe design with access points and protective covers
