Combined Mechanical Screening & Grit Removal Unit
Introduction

The Combine Unit by Purecreek Environmental Services integrates mechanical screening and grit/sand removal in one compact system. It is designed to handle coarse solids, rags, sand, and grit in wastewater, minimizing footprint, reducing installation complexity, and protecting downstream equipment while optimizing operation.
Applications
- Municipal wastewater plants for pretreatment headworks
- Industrial wastewater treatment (food & beverage, pulp & paper, chemical, mining)
- Stormwater and combined sewage overflow systems
- Plants seeking simplified mechanical pretreatment with less equipment and installation cost
How It Works
Wastewater first passes through a screening section to remove large solids and debris using bars, screens, or hooks. The screened water then flows into a grit removal chamber or section where heavier particles like sand and grit settle out due to reduced flow velocity or vortex/gravity action. The collected grit is discharged and removed, while screened solids are conveyed or compacted (if the integrate compactor option is present).
Models & Options
- Screening Options: bar screens, hook bars, coarse screens
- Grit Removal Methods: gravity / vortex / grit chamber designs; may include grit wash or classifier
- Materials: stainless steel 304 / 316; carbon steel with corrosion resistance as option
- Configurations: channel-mounted, tank-based or modular skid units
- Optional Features: compactors, grit dewatering, spray wash for grit, control panels, automated cleaning

Key Benefits
- Single unit that combines screening and grit removal → saves space & installation cost
- Reduced number of separate components → simpler maintenance and controls
- Protection of pumps, membranes, tanks from both coarse solids and abrasive sand / grit
- Lower manpower and operational costs due to integrated design
- Flexibility to customize to the flow, debris load, and grit concentration of your wastewater
Compliance
Purecreek Combine Units are designed in collaboration with SEFT Group, built to meet Canadian safety and environmental standards (CSA, UL, ETL), and constructed with durable materials suited for harsh conditions.
Case Reference
At a municipal wastewater treatment facility in Saskatchewan, installation of a Combine Unit reduced both debris-related pump failures and grit accumulation by over 50%, improving overall reliability and lowering maintenance overhead.
Maintenance & Operation
- Access for cleaning / inspection of screen elements and grit chamber
- Periodic removal of accumulated grit / sediments and disposal
- Replaceable screens, wear parts, grit discharge mechanisms
- Safety features including guards, safe access points
